Encrypt Data Issue

Does SQL Server 2000 provide any data encryption/decryption functionality so that certain fields (e.g. SSN, Age and Salary) will be encrypted before writing into the table and decrypted once loading out of the table?

Encryption is a method for keeping sensitive information confidential by changing data into an unreadable form. Encryption ensures that data remains secure by keeping the information hidden from everyone, even if the encrypted data is viewed directly. Decryption is the process of changing encrypted data back into its original form so it can be viewed by authorized users.

Microsoft SQL Server encrypts or can encrypt:

Login and application role passwords stored in SQL Server.

Any data sent between the client and the server as network packets.

Stored procedure definitions.

User-defined function definitions.

View definitions.

Trigger definitions.

Default definitions.

Rule definitions.

Encripting a field in a table

I have inherited a database program that has a table for usernames and passwords. Unfortunetly, I must give certain users read only access to the SQL tables. Therefore, the Usernames and the passwords can be viewed. Question isw there a way of encripting this field so that it can't be read?

you can use pwdencrypt sql function., but there are certain thing u have to keep in mind..

The field should be nvarchar.
u cannt unencrypt the string after encrypting it.

select pwdencrypt('abc')

this is how u can compare 2 strings -
select pwdcompare('abc',pwdencrypt('abc'))
1 for true
0 for false.

enabling anonymous access to reports

I'm developing an SSRS 2000 solution that will require allowing anyone in
the company to view certain reports but only a select few to create them
(while I administer the site).
I understand how to add users specifically (Windows NT logins) and assign
them roles, so I'm partway there. What I can't see is how to also enable
anonymous access, either generally or to specific reports or report folders.
If I turn anonymous access on in IIS for the Reports and/or Reportserver
folders, I lose the ability to administer the site. If I turn it off,
anonymous users can't get in. Security seems either black or white and I'm
looking for some shade of grey. I've tried numerous combinations of
settings and nothing has worked. I've added the server's IUSR account to
the SSRS solution but it didn't make any difference. Guest account is
disabled on the server.
What am I missing here? Is it an IAS problem? Note that IAS is on but not
registered in Active Directory for this server (IT is resisting enabling
that) so I hope that's not the problem here.

Randall ArnoldYou don't have to do individual users. You can also use groups. Almost all
domains have a group that includes everybody (for instance a group called
Users). Just add this group to the browser roll.

something like Reports). I then add the domain groups and users to it. I
then use this local group to add to a role.

Empty Recordset

New to Reporting Services.
I have written a stored procedure which I call from a report built with RS.
Certain parameters being passed to the procedure does not materialize a
record set, therefore, the report comes up blank, with no labels etc. What I
need to do is detect an empty record set, from within the report, and set
default values so the report does not appear blank. I have tried the
IsNothing function within each text boxes expressions, however, it does not
work. Has anyone run into this and if so, would you be so kind to provide a
solution?

You could modify your stored procedure to test whether or not you
retrieve records depending on the parameters you pass. If the query in your
stored procedure does not return records, then you can pass a single record
with the default values in a Select statement, that you want to show in the
report...
